Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Italy and Malta ↗The region's headline sights run on timed tickets that sell out: book the Vatican Museums, the Colosseum, the Uffizi, the Last Supper and Malta's Hypogeum before you fix train and hotel dates.
  • Italy and Malta ↗Budget for per-night city taxes in Italy (up to about €10 a person in Rome), Malta's per-night environmental contribution, and Venice's day-visitor fee on peak days; none are included in most online room prices.
  • Italy ↗Italy is in the Schengen area. Check the entry rules for your passport on official sources; the EU's Entry/Exit System registers non-EU visitors at the first Schengen border, and further pre-travel authorisation rules are being introduced.
  • Italy ↗Historic centres are ZTL limited-traffic zones: cameras fine any unauthorised car that enters, often months later through the hire company. Park outside and walk in.
  • Italy ↗Regional train tickets bought on paper must be validated in the machine on the platform before boarding; digital tickets carry a time and need no stamping.
  • Italy ↗Venice charges day-visitors an access fee on selected peak days; check the city's official site if you are not sleeping there.

Clusane is a 2,000-person fishing village on the south shore of Lake Iseo, inside the Franciacorta wine zone. It is known for one dish, roasted tench (tinca al forno), and for vineyards on Monte Alto. There is no station and no real sight list: you come for a slow lake day, a wine stop and a long dinner. One night covers it; two if you add a swim and a winery visit.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The village is walkable: old centre between the main road and the lake, parish church on the far side of the road. Buses stop on Via Risorgimento (lines toward Iseo, Sarnico, Palazzolo and Brescia). In summer, boats link Clusane with Iseo, Monte Isola, Sarnico, Predore and the other lake towns. A car helps for wineries and Monte Alto.

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Iseo

go

Door to door: 20–30 min

Bus LS002 or LS003 from Via Risorgimento, or summer boat

Bigger lake town with the ferry hub for Monte Isola.

Monte Isola

go

Door to door: 30–60 min

Boat from Clusane in summer, or bus to Iseo then ferry

Walk or rent a bike on the island; check the last boat back.

Sarnico

go

Door to door: 20–30 min

Bus LS002 or car along SP12

Lakeside town with Liberty villas and a waterfront walk.

Brescia

go

Door to door: 1–1.5 h

Bus toward Brescia, or bus to Iseo then train

Roman Capitolium and Santa Giulia museum, a UNESCO site; half a day.

Bergamo

caution

Door to door: 1.5–2 h

Car or bus/train via Brescia

Better as an airport stop than a day trip from here.

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Lungolago / Via Risorgimento

Lakefront strip with most hotels, campsites, the lido and the restaurants; walk to everything.

Historic centre around the castle

Quiet lanes above the water, 3–5 min walk down to the harbour; best for a short stay.

Hillside (Via del Dossello, Mirabella)

Hotels with pools and lake views; you need a car or a 10–15 min walk to the water.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe for a village of this size; the real issues are unlit lanes after dark, swimming where no one else is, and summer road traffic on the SP12 through the centre.
  • No railway station: you arrive by bus, boat or car (SP12 from Iseo toward Sarnico).
  • Lake ferries run mainly in summer; outside the season check the timetable before planning a boat day.
  • Carmagnola Castle is private and visits are by appointment only.
  • Free public wifi is scarce; use your hotel, bar or an eSIM.
  • Many lakeside restaurants and campsites close from late October to March.
