Go for one day or one night from Riga: trains run about every 90 min, the old town walks in 2 hours, and the manor cluster needs a car.

Tukums is a small rose-town 70 km west of Riga, reachable by train or bus in about 1 h 15 min. The compact centre — Freedom Square, the castle tower, three churches, the museum — takes half a day on foot. The reason to sleep here is the manor ring: Durbe, Šlokenbeka and Jaunmokas, all outside town and best with a car. Most travellers do it as a day trip from Riga; one night is enough if you want the manors.

The centre is walkable in 15–20 minutes end to end. Durbe Manor is about 2 km east of the centre, Šlokenbeka about 4 km east, Jaunmokas about 12 km west — all awkward without a car. Local buses exist but are sparse; check 1188.lv for times.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe. The real issues are thin late transport back to Riga, unlit roads if you walk between manors after dark, and winter ice on cobbles.
  • Two train stations: Tukums 1 is central, Tukums 2 is 4 km (2.5 mi) west. Check which one your train or bus uses before booking a bed.
  • Two bus stops too — Tukuma AO by Tukums 1, Tukuma lauktehnika near Tukums 2. Onward buses may skip the centre.
  • Manor and museum hours shrink outside May–Sep; the castle tower switches to winter hours from September.
  • Some listed lodging prices are years out of date; confirm by phone or booking site before you rely on them.
