Dunolly

Go for one night if you are driving the Goldfields: the Welcome Stranger obelisk at Moliagul is 15 km (9.3 mi) away and the town itself is a 30-minute stop.

Dunolly is a small Goldfields town of under 1,000 people, about 2 h 30 min from Melbourne by road and 20 min from Maryborough. It matters for one reason: the world's largest gold nugget, the Welcome Stranger, was found at Moliagul, 15 km north-west, in 1869. The town has a museum, a bakery, a pub and a caravan park. Most travellers see it as a half-day detour between Bendigo and Ballarat, or a quiet night on the Goldfields loop.

  • Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
  • Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
  • Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
  • Australia ↗Almost every visitor needs a visa or an electronic authorisation (ETA or eVisitor, depending on passport) before boarding: apply only through the official Department of Home Affairs site or the official AustralianETA app, and check the rules for your passport.
  • Australia ↗Declare all food, plant material, seeds, wood and animal products on your arrival declaration; undeclared items can bring on-the-spot fines or visa cancellation. When unsure, declare it.
  • Australia ↗Drive on the left. An overseas licence in English (or with an official translation or International Driving Permit) is accepted for visitors; check the state rules and your rental contract.
  • Australia ↗Swim between the red and yellow flags on patrolled beaches; rip currents cause most beach drownings.

Getting around

You need a car. Dunolly has no rail service; V/Line coaches from Bendigo, Ballarat and Melbourne stop in town 1–2 times a day, but the Welcome Stranger site at Moliagul has no public transport. The town itself is walkable in 10 minutes end to end.

Moliagul and the Welcome Stranger obelisk

go

Door to door: About 30–40 min each way

Drive north-west on the Maryborough-Dunolly road, then follow brown signs to Old Bealiba Moliagul Road

The obelisk marks the 1869 find; there is no gold left to see, so go for the story and the drive.

Maryborough

go

Door to door: About 25 min

Drive 20 min on the Maryborough-Dunolly road

Railway station, supermarket and the best food and fuel within 20 min.

Bendigo

go

Door to door: About 50 min

Drive 45 min via the Bendigo-Maryborough road

Gallery, restaurants and the main V/Line junction; a good base for two nights.

Maldon

go

Door to door: About 40 min

Drive via Fogartys Gap Road

Better-preserved gold town with a steam railway; pair it with Dunolly in one day.

Ballarat

caution

Door to door: About 1 h 15 min

Drive south-east via Maryborough

Doable as a day trip but better as its own stop.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe. The real risks are wildlife on the road at dawn and dusk, summer heat above 40 °C (104 °F), and long gaps between fuel stops.
  • No fuel in town at all hours: fill up at Maryborough or Bendigo (check current opening).
  • Mobile coverage is patchy on the Moliagul and Bealiba back roads.
  • Kangaroos on the road at dawn and dusk: slow down on the Maryborough-Dunolly road.
  • Summer days above 40 °C (104 °F) are common in January and February; carry water.
