Dunolly
Go for one night if you are driving the Goldfields: the Welcome Stranger obelisk at Moliagul is 15 km away and the town itself is a 30-minute stop.
Dunolly is a small Goldfields town of under 1,000 people, about 2 h 30 min from Melbourne by road and 20 min from Maryborough. It matters for one reason: the world's largest gold nugget, the Welcome Stranger, was found at Moliagul, 15 km north-west, in 1869. The town has a museum, a bakery, a pub and a caravan park. Most travellers see it as a half-day detour between Bendigo and Ballarat, or a quiet night on the Goldfields loop.
