Trikala is a flat, walkable Thessaly town on the Litheos river, 25 km from the Meteora monasteries and the gateway to the Koziakas mountains and Plastira Lake. It has a strong cafe and bar scene, a Byzantine fort, an Ottoman mosque and a free industrial-mill museum, but few travellers give it more than a night. Use it as a low-cost base or a half-day between Meteora trips, not as a destination on its own.

Getting around

The centre is flat and most sights sit within a 20-minute walk. The tourist information kiosk on the central square lends bicycles free for 3 hours against your ID. Intra-city buses exist but stops and routes are poorly marked, so they are hard to use without Greek. Taxis cover short hops across town (fares check); a car helps for the mountains and Plastira Lake.

Watch out

Safety

Trikala is a low-crime provincial town and feels safe day and night. Main issues are traffic on the ring roads, unlit lanes in Varousi after dark, and summer heat.
  • The rail line via Palaiofarsalos was damaged in 2023 and remained closed into late 2025, with reopening expected in 2026: confirm before you plan a train.
  • The main KTEL bus station is about 4 km (2.5 mi) from the centre on the Karditsa road; allow time and a taxi.
  • KTEL publishes schedules that are not always current: verify your trip in the online ticketing cart before travelling.
  • Summer afternoons in July and August are hot and the centre has little shade; walk early or late.
