Go for one night, not a rushed day trip: temple at opening, Geghard before the tour buses, gorge walk in the afternoon.
Garni is a village of about 8,000 people in Kotayk, 30 km east of Yerevan, built around a 1st-century BC Hellenistic temple above the Azat gorge. Most visitors see it in three hours between a bus and a monastery; staying one night lets you reach the temple before the groups and walk the gorge to the Symphony of Stones. Geghard monastery is 5 km east, the Khosrov Reserve starts across the river, and Yerevan is close enough that you can still sleep in the capital if you prefer.

Getting around
Walking covers the village and the temple. Marshrutka 266 from Yerevan's Gai bus station runs to Garni and on to Goght, 500 dram, every 30 min or so. For Geghard, the gorge and the reserve, take a taxi or drive: Garni–Goght–Geghard is about 15 km and a taxi with waiting time is the practical option.

Safety
- Khosrov Reserve entry needs permission: ask at the Garni information centre or the forest guards' kiosk on the Havuts Tar trail.
- Gorge trails are loose rock and unmarked in places; wear shoes with grip and do not start late in the day.
- Marshrutka 266 stops running in the evening; check the last departure before you commit to a late temple visit.
- Cards are not accepted everywhere in the village; carry dram cash for buses, stalls and small guesthouses.
