Go for 2–3 nights if you want a guided Nam Ha trek; otherwise treat it as a one-night bus or train stop between Huay Xai and Luang Prabang.
Luang Namtha is northern Laos's trekking base, on the Nam Tha River about 3 hours by train from Luang Prabang. The town itself is compact and short on sights; the reason to come is the Nam Ha National Protected Area, where community-based trekking agencies run one- to four-day village and jungle walks. Most travellers stay 2–3 nights, or pass through in one night on the overland route between Thailand and Luang Prabang.
