Rules in force · 7
- Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
- Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
- Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
- New Zealand ↗Visa-waiver visitors need an NZeTA (with the tourism levy) before travel, including many transit passengers; others need a visa. Apply only through Immigration New Zealand or its official app, and check the rules for your passport.
- New Zealand ↗Declare all food, plant and animal products, and used outdoor gear such as hiking boots and tents, on the New Zealand Traveller Declaration; undeclared risk items bring instant fines.
- New Zealand ↗Drive on the left; give way as signed at one-lane bridges; an English-language licence or one with an approved translation or International Driving Permit is required.
- New Zealand ↗Freedom camping is restricted: sleep in a vehicle only where signed as allowed, and in many places only in certified self-contained vehicles.
Queenstown sits on Lake Wakatipu under the Remarkables, and almost everything worth doing is an activity you pay for rather than a sight you walk to. The compact centre is walkable, but the ski fields, bungy sites and trailheads are 20–90 minutes out, so a car or a tour transfer decides your day. Budget for the activities first; they cost more than the bed.

Arrive & move
Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in
Getting around
The centre is small enough to walk. Orbus buses run five routes; route 1 links the centre, Frankton and the airport every 15 minutes. Cash fares are about $4 in town and $10 to the airport; a Bee Card cuts fares to about $2.50. Parking in the centre is scarce and paid; a rental car pays off for ski fields, Glenorchy and wine country.
See & do
Day-trips, door to door
Day-trips
Milford Sound
cautionDoor to door: 12–14 h by road
Coach or self-drive via Te Anau, 4–5 h each way; scenic flights cut it to about 40 min
Too long as a same-day drive; take a coach tour or sleep in Te Anau.
Glenorchy
goDoor to door: About 1 h
45 min drive along Lake Wakatipu on the Glenorchy–Queenstown Road
The drive is the point; walk the lagoon track and the Glenorchy Walkway.
Arrowtown
goDoor to door: About 30 min
20 min drive; buses and shuttles are limited, so check the timetable or drive
Gold-rush main street, easy half day; combine with the Gibbston wineries.
Wānaka
goDoor to door: About 1.5 h
1 h 15 min drive over the Crown Range
Quieter lake town; check the Crown Range for snow closures in winter.
Kingston
cautionDoor to door: About 45 min
40 min drive south along the lake
A short stop for the old railway and lake views, not a full day.
Eat & sleep
Which area to sleep in
Where to sleep
Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.
Queenstown centre (Camp St, Shotover St, the Mall)
Walk to bars, the wharf and the gondola; loudest at night, so ask for a room away from the street.
Frankton and Remarkables Park
Near the airport and the bus hub; cheaper beds, 15 min by bus to the centre.
Fernhill and Sunshine Bay
Quieter, uphill, 10–15 min walk or a short bus ride into town.
Arrowtown
20 min drive; a calmer base with its own restaurants if you have a car.

Watch out
Safety
- Activities are priced individually and add up fast: a bungy is around $200 (≈ US$120), skydiving $300 (≈ US$180)+, jet boating $100 (≈ US$60)+ (2026 estimate).
- Peak-season beds and restaurant tables sell out; book accommodation and any headline activity ahead.
- Winter access roads to the ski fields can need chains; Lindis Pass and the Crown Range can close in snow.
- Milford Sound is a 4–5 h drive each way: go by coach or fly, or sleep in Te Anau.
- Bars and clubs run late; the centre is noisy until the early hours.
