Queenstown
Tāhuna
Give Queenstown 3 nights as an activity base, not a sightseeing stop: book one big-ticket adventure, walk the centre, and drive out for the rest.
Queenstown sits on Lake Wakatipu under the Remarkables, and almost everything worth doing is an activity you pay for rather than a sight you walk to. The compact centre is walkable, but the ski fields, bungy sites and trailheads are 20–90 minutes out, so a car or a tour transfer decides your day. Budget for the activities first; they cost more than the bed.

Get around
The centre is small enough to walk. Orbus buses run five routes; route 1 links the centre, Frankton and the airport every 15 minutes. Cash fares are about $4 in town and $10 to the airport; a Bee Card cuts fares to about $2.50. Parking in the centre is scarce and paid; a rental car pays off for ski fields, Glenorchy and wine country.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Kia ora or a handshake; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; overlong small talk before business
- Marae visit: Wait to be called on, follow your guide through the pōwhiri, remove shoes before the meeting house; avoid: Eating or drinking inside the wharenui; walking in front of speakers
- Tables and heads: Keep bottoms off tables and hats off tables; food stays away from heads; avoid: Sitting on tables or kitchen benches; touching people's heads
- Roads: Pull over at slow-vehicle bays to let queues pass; wave thanks; avoid: Stopping on the road for photos; drifting right after a stop
- Outdoors: Carry out all rubbish; use toilets; stick to tracks; avoid: Feeding kea and other birds; toileting outside
- Talk: Self-deprecating humour and understatement; avoid: Calling New Zealanders Australians; boasting
- Home visit: Bring wine or something to share; shoes off if the hosts do; avoid: Arriving empty-handed to a 'bring a plate' event
- Names: Use Māori place names and pronounce them with care; avoid: Joking about Māori words or haka
Scams and watch-outs
- Activities are priced individually and add up fast: a bungy is around $200, skydiving $300+, jet boating $100+ (2026 estimate).
- Peak-season beds and restaurant tables sell out; book accommodation and any headline activity ahead.
- Winter access roads to the ski fields can need chains; Lindis Pass and the Crown Range can close in snow.
- Milford Sound is a 4–5 h drive each way: go by coach or fly, or sleep in Te Anau.
- Bars and clubs run late; the centre is noisy until the early hours.
Queenstown is a safe, small resort town; the real risks are adventure-activity injuries, alpine weather that turns fast, and drink spiking or theft in late-night bars. Lock the car and keep valuables off the trailheads.
