  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Pawtucket is a small Rhode Island city on the Blackstone River where Samuel Slater's 1793 cotton mill started the American Industrial Revolution. Its sights are a riverside mill complex, a large city park and a handful of small theatres and music rooms. Most travellers see it as a half-day or day trip from Providence, 10 minutes south by car or bus.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

RIPTA buses run daily; Route 99 from Kennedy Plaza in Providence continues as Routes 76 and 71 toward Central Avenue, Newport Avenue and Broad Street. Downtown is easiest by bus because traffic and one-way streets frustrate driving. I-95 runs through the city; Exit 29 (from I-95 north) leads to Central Avenue and downtown. The nearest passenger rail stop is downtown Providence, about a 10-minute drive.

Watch out

Safety

Pawtucket is a normal small US city: daytime sights and parks are fine, use ordinary care after dark downtown, and drive or take a bus rather than walk the highway corridors.
  • Winter ice on pavements and park paths; some park facilities close in the cold months (check).
  • One-way streets around the bus station and the public library catch out drivers.
  • Small venues can sell out for weekend shows: buy ahead (check).
  • Check opening days for the mill site and galleries before you travel — some run seasonal or limited hours.
