Laiwu莱芜

Skip as a destination: Laiwu is a steel district of Jinan with one passenger rail station and no high-speed link. Go only if you are already in Shandong and want Xueye Lake or the Fanggan hills.

Laiwu is a former prefecture-level city that became a district of Jinan in 2019, about 1.5 h by bus southeast of central Jinan. It is an industrial city on the Wen River with a small downtown, a handful of free parks and museums, and its real draw in the north: the Xueye Lake tourist area and the Fanggan and Xiangshan mountain parks. Trains are slow and infrequent, so most visitors arrive by bus or car.

  • East Asia ↗Every border in East Asia is a full international border, Hong Kong and Macau included: an entry permission for one never covers the next.
  • East Asia ↗Ferries between Korea, Japan and China cancel in rough seas and typhoons; keep a flight or a spare day behind every sea leg.
  • China ↗Most nationalities need a visa, a unilateral visa-free entry (the list and end dates change) or the transit exemption below. Confirm your route on the official sites before you buy a ticket.
  • China ↗Transit stay without a visa: up to 240 hours (10 days) for citizens of about 55 listed countries who pass through China to a third country or region, with a confirmed onward ticket and a stay inside the permitted area (Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei count as one area). It replaced the 144-hour rule in December 2024, which some older pages still quote. Use the transit lane at immigration, show the onward ticket, and check the current nationality list. Hong Kong and Macau count as separate regions; check whether your ticket qualifies.
  • China ↗Foreign visitors must register their address with the police within 24 hours; hotels do it at check-in with your passport. Carry the original passport at all times: hotels, trains, museums, Tiananmen Square and police checks ask for it.
  • China ↗Set up Alipay or WeChat Pay with a foreign card before you fly. QR payment is the default in shops, taxis and many stalls, and some places refuse cash or a foreign card. Carry cash as a backup.
  • China ↗Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and many news sites are blocked. Use an eSIM with roaming (it routes through your home network) or install and test a VPN before you fly; VPN sites and app stores are hard to reach inside China, and only government-approved VPNs are officially permitted.

Getting around

City buses cost ¥1, or ¥2 with air conditioning (K-prefixed routes); K20 runs to the suburbs at ¥3. Taxis start at ¥7 and are hard to find after 21:00 or outside the centre — have your destination written in Chinese or use a ride-hailing app. About 70 public bike stations rent free for the first hour with a card.

Watch out

Safety

Laiwu is a low-crime industrial district and safe for ordinary travel. The real problems are practical: no English on transport, taxis that vanish after 21:00, and mountain parks where the last bus leaves early.
  • Almost no English is spoken or written on buses and taxis; carry addresses in Chinese.
  • Laiwu East (Laiwudong) is the only passenger station and has no high-speed trains: Taishan is about 1.5 h on train 7053, Zibo about 4 h on 7054.
  • Mountain parks are far from the centre and buses are few; missing the last bus means an expensive taxi.
  • Summer brings heavy rain in July and August; winter mountain roads can be icy.
