Lillooet sits in a desert-like rain shadow on the Fraser River, 225 km from Vancouver and 130 km from Whistler on Highway 99. It was briefly the largest town of the Fraser River Gold Rush in 1858–1860 and marks mile zero of the old Cariboo Wagon Road. The town itself is small (about 2,300 people) and most of what you came for — Seton Lake, the Bridge River canyon, the fishing grounds at Six Mile — is a short drive out.

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: the sights are 6–40 km apart on Highway 99 and Highway 12, and there is no town bus. BC Transit runs Health Connections trips from Kamloops via Cache Creek twice a week, reserved two business days ahead, about 2.5 hours, with medical appointments given priority. The Tsal'alh Seton train connects the Lillooet station to Shalalth and Seton Portage at the far end of Seton Lake; reserve by phone, and local residents may get seats ahead of visitors. Taxis cover town.

Watch out

Safety

Lillooet is a small, quiet town and violent crime is rare. The real risks are heat and distance: long gaps between fuel, water and phone signal on the side roads, summer wildfire smoke and closures, and ice on the passes in winter.
  • Summer heat is real: carry water on any walk or drive, and do not leave people or pets in the car.
  • Side roads (West Side Road, Moha Road, the High Line) are rough, sometimes unsealed and without fuel or phone signal: pack gas, water and a spare.
  • Forest-fire smoke and closures can shut Highway 99 or Highway 12 with little notice in July–September: check DriveBC before you set out.
  • Winter brings ice and snow on the passes; the Whistler and Cache Creek routes can close.
  • The Seton train and Health Connections bus both need advance booking and can sell out.
