Jaffna is the Tamil north: a small, low-rise city of Hindu kovils, a war-scarred fort and library, and a scatter of islands reached by causeway and ferry. It sees few tourists, the food is its own thing, and the heat is the main constraint. Two nights covers the city; three adds an island or Kankesanthurai.

Getting around

The city is spread out and buses have little English information online, so tuk-tuk is the practical default (about Rs 100 per km). Scooters rent from about Rs 2,000 a day, bicycles from about Rs 750. Private minivans can be hired by the day for island trips. Trains run north to Kankesanthurai.

Watch out

Safety

Jaffna is calm and low-crime, and the war ended in 2009. The real risks are heat, unmarked rural ground, jellyfish and swimming past the markers; solo women report few problems but dress modestly at temples.
  • Tap water is not drinkable; use bottled or filtered water.
  • Do not swim past the floating markers, and watch for jellyfish washed up at dawn.
  • Landmines from the civil war may still exist in some rural areas: stay on paths and roads.
  • Very little nightlife; drinking is mostly done at your guesthouse.
  • Dogs on the streets make cycling less safe than it looks.
