Olympia, WashingtonOlympia
Give Olympia one full day plus a night: the Capitol campus, the farmers market and downtown are walkable; add a second night only for the Chehalis Western Trail or a South Sound loop.
Olympia is Washington's capital and the seat of Thurston County, a small city of about 46,000 on Budd Inlet at the south end of Puget Sound. It is a stop on I-5 between Seattle (about 65 mi, 65 min) and Portland (about 100 mi, 2 h), with a compact historic downtown, a free-to-enter Capitol campus and an unusually busy music and arts scene for its size. Most travellers see it in a day; two nights suits a slower South Sound trip with Lacey and Tumwater.

- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
- United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
- United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
- United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Near the Capitol campus and Evergreen State College; quieter, more parking, a short drive or bus to downtown.
Eastside / Pacific Ave
Motels and chain hotels along I-5 exits 107–109; cheapest beds, but you need a car or bus for downtown.
Lacey
Suburb 5–10 min east with more hotels and the Amtrak station; good if you arrive or leave by train.
