Turku is Finland's oldest city and the western gateway to the Archipelago Sea. The centre is small and walkable along the River Aura, with the cathedral at one end and the castle at the other. Two nights covers the sights and a boat out to the islands; one night works if you are catching a ferry to Sweden or Åland.

Getting around

The centre is walkable: cathedral to castle along the river is about 2–3 km (approximate). Local buses cover the rest; the airport bus (line 1) links the airport, centre and port. Trains run to Helsinki and Tampere in about 2 h.

Watch out

Safety

Turku is a safe city. The real risks are winter ice and darkness, and pickpockets around the market square and nightlife in summer: keep an eye on bags.
  • The central railway station platforms moved in August 2024 to Logomo; access is via the Logomo bridge, about 750 m from Kauppatori. A new permanent station is planned for 2026.
  • Winter is dark and icy; pavements and the river can be slippery.
  • Ferry and archipelago boat timetables thin out outside summer: check before booking.
