Brussels is a two-speed city: do the Grand-Place, the arcades and the Sablon on foot in one morning, and give the EU quarter, Cinquantenaire and Horta's Saint-Gilles a separate half day by metro or tram.
The centre of Brussels is small and flat enough to walk, but the sights beyond it are spread over trams and metro lines, and the language on every sign, ticket and station is in two versions. Trips go wrong when a day is planned around Monday, when the big museums are closed, or when a late flight meets a train that has stopped. Four clusters cover a first visit; Bruges, Ghent and Antwerp are trains away from one kept bed.

- Greetings: A handshake for business or first meetings; friends often exchange one or three light cheek kisses — follow the other person's lead.
- Language: Brussels is bilingual French–Dutch; greeting in French is the safer default in the centre, but do not assume everyone speaks French — English works widely too.
- Tipping: Service is included by law; rounding up or leaving a euro or two for good service is appreciated, not expected.
