Norfolk is a working Navy port and Virginia's cultural centre, with the Chrysler Museum, a battleship you can walk through and a compact downtown on the Elizabeth River. It is not a beach town, though Ocean View on the Chesapeake Bay has sand 15 minutes from downtown. Most visitors use it as a 2-night base for Hampton Roads, pairing it with Virginia Beach or Colonial Williamsburg.

Getting around
Downtown and Ghent are walkable. The Tide light rail runs from the Virginia Beach border through downtown to Sentara, and HRT buses cover the rest; a single ride is $2 and an all-day pass $4.50, valid on buses, the Tide and the Portsmouth ferry. Bring exact change — drivers and ferry crew do not carry cash. Driving is only worth it for Ocean View, the botanical garden or day trips; downtown signage is poor.
