Rules in force · 7
  • Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
  • Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
  • Micronesia ↗Micronesia runs on a handful of weekly flights, so one cancellation can cost several days: build slack into every connection between islands.
  • Northern Mariana Islands ↗US entry rules apply: a US visa, ESTA, or eligibility for the Guam–CNMI Visa Waiver Program. Check US Customs and Border Protection for your passport, and note that the Guam–CNMI waiver does not allow travel on to the rest of the US.
  • Northern Mariana Islands ↗The CNMI runs its own customs and quarantine check: declare food, plants and animal products on arrival.
  • Northern Mariana Islands ↗Second World War sites (Banzai Cliff, Tinian's North Field) are memorials; do not remove relics or climb on structures.
  • Saipan ↗From July to November a typhoon can close the airport and the boats: keep a spare day before an international flight.

Who it suits, the trade-offs and when to go

Overview

The city in one paragraph, who it fits, and how many days it takes.

Saipan's west-coast lagoon holds the hotels, the beaches and the Managaha boats. Distances are short but public transport is minimal, so a taxi or hire car joins the clusters. Four clusters cover a first visit; the war sites in the north-east and the southern villages are car legs. Flights come mostly via Guam, Japan and Korea, are few, and stop in storms.

Fits

  • Beach and boat trips
  • Short resort stays
  • Second World War history visits

Does not fit

  • Travellers who will not hire a car or taxi
  • Budget-only trips (prices are US-level)
  • Storm-season trips with no spare day

Don't confuse
Saipan is the island and Garapan is its main resort town on the west coast; the airport is 15–20 minutes south, and Tinian and Rota are separate islands.

Where’s what, as a list:

  • Garapan beach road & Paseo de Marianas: Evening cluster: the beach road, restaurants and the waterfront promenade; flat and easy on foot once the heat drops.
  • Chalan Kanoa & Susupe: Quiet southern cluster: village streets, the pier and beach, and a few hotels; a car ride from the main resort strip.
  • American Memorial Park & Micro Beach: Morning cluster: the memorial park, its museum and the beach; flat and open, with tree shade in parts.
  • Smiling Cove marina & Managaha boats: Early cluster: the marina area where the Managaha boats load; be at the dock at your operator's check-in time.
  • Sleep area Chalan Kanoa: suits Families, older travellers, price band $$.
  • Sleep area Garapan beach road: suits Families, older travellers, price band $$$.
  • Saipan International Airport (SPN), 20–35 min by the usual route.

Decide

The honest trade-off: what you will enjoy, what will wear you down.

You will like

You will hate

Arrive & move

Getting in, getting around, and your bags

Arrive

Gateways

Each gateway has its own airport-to-bed page with timings and the last safe connection.

Move

The default way around, when a pass pays off, and when the last trains go.

Default
Walk inside a cluster in the morning or evening; a taxi or hire car between clusters.
Passes
No pass. Agree the fare before you get in, or hire a car for the days you leave the lagoon.
Last trains
No rail. Taxis are few late at night: ask the hotel to book the ride back before you go out.

Luggage

Where big bags are a problem, and how to get rid of them for the day.

Rule

Hot pavements and long gaps between shade: bags go from the car to the door, never on a walk.
Lockers
No public lockers; hotels hold bags after check-out.
Forwarding
No forwarding culture; keep the big bag at the Garapan hotel.
Dead zone
Late flights: ask the hotel to hold bags and for a room to shower.
