SweetwaterSweetwater, Texas

One night on an I-20 drive, or a half-day stop for the WASP museum and the wind turbines. Not a destination on its own.

Sweetwater is a small West Texas town on I-20 between Abilene and Big Spring, seat of Nolan County and a top wind-power county. The draw is the National WASP WWII Museum and the turbine fields; the town itself is a chain-restaurant and motel stop. Most travellers pass through in an afternoon or sleep one night en route.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

You need a car. I-20 runs along the north edge; Broadway St is the main north–south strip through town. There is no useful public transit; distances between the museum, downtown and the motels are 5–15 min by car.

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Big Spring

go

Door to door: About 45 min

I-20 west, about 45 min

Hotel and restaurant stop with a state park nearby; pairs with Sweetwater on the same drive.

Door to door: About 45 min

I-20 east, about 45 min

Larger town with more food, hotels and a zoo; useful if Sweetwater is full.

Door to door: About 1 h 30 min

US-70 south, about 1 h 30 min

Concho River walk and more dining; a reasonable next overnight.

Sterling City

caution

Door to door: About 1 h

US-87 south then SH-158, about 1 h

Small town with little to do; only worth it if you have a specific reason.

Brownwood

caution

Door to door: About 1 h 45 min

US-84 east, about 1 h 45 min

Longer drive; better as an overnight than a return day trip.

Coleman

caution

Door to door: About 1 h 30 min

US-84 east then US-283 south, about 1 h 30 min

Small historic town; combine with Brownwood rather than a dedicated trip.

Chain motels and truck stops; easiest for a one-night drive stop with a car.

A few independent options and the historic courthouse square; walkable but limited.

Watch out

Safety

Low street crime; the real risks are summer heat, long empty I-20 stretches and winter ice. Keep water in the car and check road conditions before driving west.
  • Summer heat: 100°F+ (38°C (100°F)+) afternoons; carry water and don't walk far midday.
  • Long gaps between services on I-20 west of Abilene; fill up before you leave town.
  • Winter ice storms can close I-20 with little warning; check road conditions before driving.
  • Rattlesnake Roundup (early March) fills every motel in town; book weeks ahead or sleep in Abilene.
