Sweetwater
Sweetwater, Texas
One night on an I-20 drive, or a half-day stop for the WASP museum and the wind turbines. Not a destination on its own.
Sweetwater is a small West Texas town on I-20 between Abilene and Big Spring, seat of Nolan County and a top wind-power county. The draw is the National WASP WWII Museum and the turbine fields; the town itself is a chain-restaurant and motel stop. Most travellers pass through in an afternoon or sleep one night en route.

Scams and watch-outs
- Summer heat: 100°F+ (38°C+) afternoons; carry water and don't walk far midday.
- Long gaps between services on I-20 west of Abilene; fill up before you leave town.
- Winter ice storms can close I-20 with little warning; check road conditions before driving.
- Rattlesnake Roundup (early March) fills every motel in town; book weeks ahead or sleep in Abilene.
Low street crime; the real risks are summer heat, long empty I-20 stretches and winter ice. Keep water in the car and check road conditions before driving west.
