- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
- United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
- United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
- United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.
Leesburg is the county seat of Loudoun County, Virginia, about an hour by car from downtown Washington, DC and roughly 20 minutes from Washington Dulles International Airport. The historic district around the Loudoun County Courthouse is small and walkable — shops, restaurants and town buildings sit within about a quarter mile — while the wider county holds wineries, breweries, a Civil War battlefield and two historic estates. Most travellers see the town in a day and stay one or two nights, using it as a quieter, cheaper base for the DC area or as a stop on the way to the Shenandoah Valley.

Getting around
The historic district is walkable — the core is about a quarter mile across. For anything beyond it you need a car, a rideshare or the Leesburg Trolley, which links downtown, the Leesburg Corner Premium Outlets and the Leesburg Park & Ride; it runs weekday mornings to evening, longer on Saturday and shorter on Sunday, for a small flat fare (check current times and fare). Loudoun County Transit runs commuter buses to DC and Arlington on weekday mornings and back on weekday evenings, and local buses connect to Ashburn and the Washington Metro Silver Line.

Watch out
Safety
- A car is effectively required outside the historic core; rideshares are thin late at night.
- Virginia Route 267 (the Dulles Toll Road) charges tolls in both directions — carry a transponder or pay by card at the booths that accept it.
- Summer afternoons are hot and humid; plan the walking loop for the morning.
- Some estate and museum tours are seasonal or by appointment only — confirm before driving out.
