Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk is the capital of Sakhalin Oblast and the island's transport hub — the airport, the railway station and the bus terminal for the whole island sit here. The city itself is a low-rise oil town with a handful of Japanese-period buildings and good museums; most travellers use it as a base for one or two nights before heading to the coast, the mud volcano or the north. Tourism infrastructure is thin and English is rare, so plan your transport before you arrive.

Getting around

A few public buses run along the main avenues, plus many route minibuses with no fixed timetable. A single bus ticket was around ₽20 in 2017 — expect more now. Taxis are cheap and the easiest option for the airport and for anywhere off the main streets. Downtown is walkable.

A quiet, low-rise city; the real risks are winter weather, long airport closures and thin English-language help. Carry your passport and registration, keep to lit main streets at night, and treat the mountains and coast as serious terrain.
  • English is rare outside oil-industry hotels; have addresses written in Russian.
  • The airport closes overnight and can be shut for long periods in bad weather — build slack into connections.
