Alibag is the Raigad district headquarters, a low-rise coastal town about 95 km south of Mumbai, known for its marine forts and beaches. Most visitors come from Mumbai for a weekend: two nights covers the town, the Kolaba fort and one beach run south. It is a beach-and-fort break, not a sightseeing city.

Getting around

Autos run in town and to nearby beaches, shared or hired; between beaches there is little scheduled transport, so a car with driver or your own vehicle is the practical choice. MSRTC buses link Alibag with Mumbai and other Maharashtra towns.

Watch out

Safety

Alibag is a low-crime beach town; the real risks are the sea (currents, no lifeguards), monsoon ferry suspensions and unlit beach roads after dark. Keep to the beach in daylight and agree auto fares before you get in.
  • Mumbai–Alibag ferries and catamarans are suspended through the monsoon (roughly May–October): check before you plan a boat arrival.
  • No railway station in Alibag; the nearest is Pen, about 30 km away.
  • Swimming is not safe at many beaches — currents and no lifeguards; ask at your stay before you go in.
  • Kolaba fort is reached by walking across at low tide only; check the tide table for the day.
