Give Fribourg one night, or a half-day stop between Bern and Lausanne: the Old Town and its bridges take 3–4 hours on foot.
Fribourg is a bilingual city on a Sarine river peninsula, 30 min by train from Bern and about 1 h from Lausanne. Its Old Town holds one of Switzerland's best-preserved sets of walls and more than 200 Gothic facades, all walkable in an afternoon. Most travellers see it as a stop on the Bern–Lausanne line rather than a base; one night is enough to add the cathedral tower and a museum.
