Stirling is the old gateway between the Lowlands and the Highlands: a castle on a crag, a medieval Old Town, and two battlefield sites within a few miles. Most visitors see it as a half-day from Edinburgh or Glasgow, but a single night lets you do the castle at opening and walk the Old Town without a train to catch. It is a compact, walkable city, and a practical first or last stop before the Highlands.

Getting around

The centre and castle are walkable; the castle esplanade is uphill from the station, about 15 minutes on foot. Buses cover the University, Bridge of Allan, Bannockburn and Falkirk; app-based bike hire runs from Bannockburn to Bridge of Allan. Taxis wait at the station.

Watch out

Safety

Stirling is a low-crime city and safe to walk by day; at night the usual UK rules apply: stick to lit streets, watch your bag in pubs, and take a licensed taxi rather than an unmarked car.
  • The castle esplanade and Old Town streets are steep and cobbled: wear shoes with grip.
  • The Bannockburn Experience runs timed slots and often sells out; the centre is due to close for rebuilding from Oct 2026 to end-2028, so check before you travel.
  • Argyll's Lodging beside the castle gate has been closed for building work: check before planning around it.
  • Summer weekends and the Highland Games fill hotels: book ahead.
