Volos is a working port city of about 86,000 people in Thessaly, roughly midway between Athens (326 km) and Thessaloniki (219 km). Ferries leave for Skiathos, Skopelos and Alonissos, and Mount Pelion villages start 20 minutes uphill. Most travellers use it for one or two nights before or after the islands, or as a food stop: the tsipouradika along the waterfront serve tsipouro with a run of small plates at a fixed price per bottle.

Getting around

The centre is flat and walkable, and cycling works well on the waterfront. City buses (Astiko KTEL) run about twelve lines; inner-city tickets are €1.10, Zone A €1.20 and Zone B €1.50. Line 5 goes to Agria and Platanidia, line 6 to Alykes, line 4 up to Ano Volos. Taxis are silver and metered: rate 1 from 05:00 to 00:00, double rate 00:00–05:00, minimum charge €3.39.

Watch out

Safety

Volos is a safe city by day and night; the real issues are taxi meter rates, short museum hours and summer heat. Use 112 for anything urgent, 1571 (≈ US$1,900) for tourist police.
  • Taxi meters have a double night rate from 00:00 to 05:00; check the rate and ask for a receipt if you think you were overcharged.
  • Expect €1–2 (≈ US$2–3) extra for a taxi from the bus station, train station or port, and a surcharge for a taxi called on demand.
  • The KTEL intercity coach station is not central; tickets can also be bought at two shops on Iasonas street.
  • Water is clearer the further you get from the port; the city beaches at Anavros and Alykes are acceptable, not the reason to come.
  • Museum hours are short and change seasonally: confirm before you go.
