Kastamonu is an inland Anatolian city at 900 m, 92 km from the Black Sea, once the capital of the Candaroğlu principality and later a supply hub in the War of Independence. The old town along the Karaçomak River is a working city rather than a restored quarter, so its mosques, hans and mansions sit among modern blocks. It works as a one-night stop on the Safranbolu–Sinop road, with the nailless Mahmut Bey Mosque as the reason to stay longer.

Getting around

The centre is small enough to walk: the bazaar, Cumhuriyet Meydanı and the river streets are within 15 minutes of each other. The castle is a 20-minute uphill walk through the old alleys. City buses run along the river strip, one-way north on the east bank and south on the west. The otogar is 7 km north and the airport 12 km south, both taxi or dolmuş rides.

Safety

Kastamonu is a small, calm inland city and feels safe on foot by day and early evening. The real risks are winter ice on pavements and mountain roads, and unlit old-town alleys after dark.
  • The otogar is 7 km north of the centre: confirm whether your bus ticket includes the dolmuş into town before you buy.
  • Winter crossings of the Ilgaz Mountains on the D765 reach about 1,800 (≈ US$45) m: check the weather before driving Ankara–Kastamonu.
  • Some hotels sit on streets with late live music; ask for a room away from the bar if you sleep early.
  • The Lunapark at the north end is often shut despite posted hours: do not plan around it.
  • The town books out when nearby garrisons hold public parades: reserve ahead on those dates.
