Birmingham is an upscale Detroit suburb with the northernmost walkable streetcar-era downtown in the metro: about 15 blocks of shops, restaurants and bars around Shain Park, plus a 1927 cinema. It is a base for Oakland County, not a sightseeing city. Two nights covers the downtown and one day trip; a car is needed for everything else.

Getting around
A car is the practical default: SMART buses run only along Woodward Avenue and Maple/15 Mile Road and are of limited use for sightseeing. Downtown is walkable end to end in about 15 minutes, and parking structures and lots offer free two-hour parking. Amtrak's Wolverine service stops at Troy Transit Center, about 10 min away by car, with trains to Chicago in 5–6 h.
