Birmingham, Michigan
Birmingham
Stay one night, not three: a walkable downtown of shops and restaurants, 30–40 min from Detroit by car. Base here only if you want a quiet, upscale suburb.
Birmingham is an upscale Detroit suburb with the northernmost walkable streetcar-era downtown in the metro: about 15 blocks of shops, restaurants and bars around Shain Park, plus a 1927 cinema. It is a base for Oakland County, not a sightseeing city. Two nights covers the downtown and one day trip; a car is needed for everything else.

A car is the practical default: SMART buses run only along Woodward Avenue and Maple/15 Mile Road and are of limited use for sightseeing. Downtown is walkable end to end in about 15 minutes, and parking structures and lots offer free two-hour parking. Amtrak's Wolverine service stops at Troy Transit Center, about 10 min away by car, with trains to Chicago in 5–6 h.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Distances between suburbs are long: without a car, plan on rideshare or a taxi, and budget for it.
- Winter driving: snow and ice from December to March; allow extra time on Woodward and I-75.
- Downtown parking is free for two hours in most structures — check the sign, tickets are enforced.
- Bars close at 2 AM statewide; last call is earlier than you may expect.
Birmingham is a low-crime, well-lit suburb and is safe to walk downtown in the evening. The real risks are driving: winter ice, deer on outer roads, and drinking then driving — rideshare is cheap here.
