Neuchâtel is a compact French-speaking lake town of about 35,000 people, built on a slope between Lake Neuchâtel and the Jura. The old town, castle and three museums sit within a 15-minute walk of each other, and the lakefront gives you swimming, boat piers and a flat promenade. It works as a one-night stop on the Jura rail line between Geneva, Lausanne and Bern, or as a two-night base for wine villages and the Creux du Van.

Getting around

Buses, tram and three funiculars run under the Transports Neuchâtelois network; most lines meet at Place Pury. A 24-hour pass covers the Neuchâtel area for CHF 7. The old town is pedestrianised, but the climb from the lakefront to the station is steep — use the funicular or bus 7/9 instead of walking it with luggage.
