Loulé
Give Loulé one night, or a half-day from Faro or Vilamoura: the old town and the Saturday market are the trip, the coast is a different trip.
Loulé is the working market town behind the Algarve coast, 15–20 min inland from Faro and Quarteira. Its draw is a small Moorish old core, a castle museum, the Islamic baths and a Saturday market that fills the streets. The municipality also holds the Golden Triangle resorts — Quinta do Lago, Vale do Lobo and Vilamoura — so the same council area covers both a €60 room and a €600 villa. Stay in town for the market and the inland villages; stay on the coast for golf and beach.

Getting around
The old town is walkable in 15 min end to end. Loulé railway station sits about 4 km south of the centre at Quatro Estradas, so most travellers arrive by bus or car; EVA buses run from Faro and other Algarve towns to a terminal in the centre. For the coast resorts and the inland villages you need a car, taxi or a booked transfer.
