Give Jember one night for the JFC carnaval or the tobacco and letter museums; skip it otherwise — the city is congested and its airport has no commercial flights.
Jember is East Java's third-largest city, a congested commercial hub on the Surabaya–Banyuwangi rail line. Its own sights are thin — a tobacco museum, a letter museum, a botanical garden — and the Jember Fashion Carnaval each August or September is the one date that fills the city. Most travellers pass through in a night. The Sukamade turtle beaches in Meru Betiri National Park are sometimes staged from here, but access, permits and road conditions all need checking before you commit.
