Bylakuppe is a Tibetan settlement in Mysore district, 6 km from Kushalnagar and about 90 km from Mysore. Namdroling (the Golden Temple) and the Sera monasteries are the draw; the settlement is spread over roughly 3,000 acres, so you need wheels or patience. Most travellers sleep in Kushalnagar and come for the morning.

Auto-rickshaws are scarce inside Bylakuppe and plentiful in Kushalnagar; hiring a vehicle with driver from Kushalnagar is the reliable option. Walking works if you have time — the monasteries sit in a large compound.

Safety

The settlement is calm and low-crime; the real risks are long unlit roads after dark, scarce transport, monsoon potholes and heat in April–May. Keep small notes for autos and monastery shops.
  • Overseas visitors staying overnight need a Protected Area Permit; apply through the Namdroling Monastery site and allow weeks, not days.
  • Monastery guesthouses are basic: confirm hot water and WiFi before you commit.
  • Auto-rickshaws thin out after dark; fix your return ride in advance.
  • Dress modestly and walk clockwise around stupas and prayer wheels.
