Morondava is a small, low-rise coastal town on Madagascar's west coast and the practical base for the Menabe: the Avenue of the Baobabs 17 km northeast, Kirindy Forest Reserve 50 km north, and the Tsingy de Bemaraha far beyond that. The town itself is a beach and a promontory of guesthouses, not a sightseeing city. Two nights covers the baobabs and Kirindy; three to four nights is the minimum if you add the Tsingy, which needs a 4x4 and a long, rough drive.

Getting around

The town is about a 30-minute walk end to end; take it slowly in the heat. Taxis cover the airport and Nosy Kely. For the baobabs and Kirindy you need a hired 4x4 with a driver, usually arranged through your guesthouse. Carry small notes: drivers often claim to have no change.

Watch out

Safety

Morondava is calmer and cheaper than Antananarivo, with few beggars. The real risks are unlit roads after dark, unlicensed taxis, cash shortages at ATMs and long, rough drives north: agree the fare and the return time before you set off.
  • Bring cash. ATMs exist (BFV-SG, AccesBanque, BNI, BOA) but can be empty or offline; BOA is Visa-only.
  • Roads north to Kirindy and the Tsingy are rough and slow; a 4x4 is required, not optional.
  • The Tsingy de Bemaraha is dry-season only and needs several days, not a day trip.
  • Blowing sand and dust in the dry season; mud in the wet season.
