Thimphuཐིམ་ཕུ

Thimphu is a slow, indoor-outdoor capital at 2,300 m: chorten at first light, museums by late morning, the dzong after office hours — and arrive through Paro with a visa already cleared.

Rules in force · 6
  • South Asia ↗Trekking regions, border districts and several Indian states need separate permits on top of the visa; check the permit before you book transport into them.
  • South Asia ↗Remove shoes (and in many Jain and Hindu temples, leather) before entering; cover shoulders and legs; ask before photographing people or rituals.
  • Bhutan ↗Sustainable Development Fee: USD 100 per adult per night for international visitors until 31 Aug 2027 (children 6–11 half rate, under 6 free); Indian nationals pay in rupees at a lower rate. Confirm the current rate on the official tourism site before booking.
  • Bhutan ↗Visa: apply through the official Bhutan tourism visa system, cleared before you board; plan the trip through a licensed Bhutanese tour operator.
  • Bhutan ↗Paro is Bhutan's only international airport: approaches are visual, flights run in daylight only, and cloud or wind cancels them; keep a spare day at both ends.
  • Western Bhutan ↗Dochula and other passes above 3,000 m can be cold and foggy year round: pack layers and start early.

Decide

Who it suits, the trade-offs and when to go

Overview

The city in one paragraph, who it fits, and how many days it takes.

Thimphu has no traffic lights and few sights, so a first visit fits in two full days. The trips that go wrong are the rushed ones: altitude on the first afternoon, dzong dress rules missed at the gate, and a Paro flight cancelled by cloud on the last day. Four small clusters cover the city; Paro and Punakha are trips away from one kept bed.

Fits

  • Slow travellers
  • Culture and temple trips
  • Short stays before Paro or Punakha

Does not fit

  • Nightlife seekers
  • Travellers on a tight budget (nightly fee)
  • Anyone with a same-day flight connection out of Paro
2 days

Don't confuse
Thimphu is the capital; Paro is the airport valley 1–1.5 h away. Most itineraries sleep in both.

Hover, tap or tab to an area to see what it is like. Pins are sleep areas; arrows at the edge point to the airport.

Off the map: Paro International Airport (PBH) (75–100 min by the usual route).

Where’s what, as a list:

  • Clock Tower & Norzin Lam: Evening cluster: the Clock Tower square, Norzin Lam shops and cafés, one flat walk; good for the arrival afternoon before altitude catches up.
  • Memorial Chorten: First-light cluster: the Memorial Chorten with local walkers circling it clockwise; 60 minutes, then a warm drink on Norzin Lam.
  • Kawajangsa museums: Late-morning cluster: Folk Heritage Museum and its restaurant, the Textile Museum and the National Library; three indoor stops within a walk.
  • Trashi Chhoe Dzong: Late-afternoon cluster: Trashi Chhoe Dzong opens to visitors outside office hours; check the hours for your date, dress formally, and keep the river-side walk for after.
  • Sleep area Motithang (hillside): suits Families, older travellers, price band $$$.
  • Sleep area Norzin Lam (town centre): suits Families, older travellers, price band $$.
  • Paro International Airport (PBH), 75–100 min by the usual route.

Decide

The honest trade-off: what you will enjoy, what will wear you down.

You will like

  • Quiet streets
  • Temple and dzong rituals
  • Crafts and textiles

You will hate

  • Cold evenings
  • Altitude
  • Strict dress rules

Arrive & move

Getting in, getting around, and your bags

Arrive

Gateways

Each gateway has its own airport-to-bed page with timings and the last safe connection.

Move

The default way around, when a pass pays off, and when the last trains go.

Default
Walk inside a cluster; operator car or taxi between clusters.
Passes
No pass. Short taxi rides are cheap; fix the fare before you get in.
Last trains
No rail; the operator car is your last-service plan. Taxis thin out after dark.

Luggage

Where big bags are a problem, and how to get rid of them for the day.

Rule

Trashi Chhoe Dzong and temples enforce formal dress at the gate: bring long sleeves and long trousers or skirt in your day bag.
Lockers
No public lockers; hotels hold bags after check-out.
Forwarding
Your operator's car carries bags between towns; keep a day pack for temples.
Dead zone
Early Paro flights: check out the night before and ask the hotel for a packed breakfast.
