Thimphu is a slow, indoor-outdoor capital at 2,300 m: chorten at first light, museums by late morning, the dzong after office hours — and arrive through Paro with a visa already cleared.

The honest verdict

Thimphu has no traffic lights and few sights, so a first visit fits in two full days. The trips that go wrong are the rushed ones: altitude on the first afternoon, dzong dress rules missed at the gate, and a Paro flight cancelled by cloud on the last day. Four small clusters cover the city; Paro and Punakha are trips away from one kept bed.
