Ladenburg

Go for half a day from Heidelberg or Mannheim, not as a base: the old town is 20 minutes end to end, so 3–4 hours covers it.

Ladenburg is a small Neckar town of about 8,300 people, 8 minutes on foot from its station to a cobbled old town that fits in a few streets. It claims the oldest city status on the right bank of the Rhine, granted in 98 AD, and it is where Carl Benz lived and worked. Two car museums, a Roman-era museum and a riverside meadow fill a half day; the evening belongs to Heidelberg or Mannheim.

Rules in force · 7Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Central Europe ↗Six of the nine countries here — Austria, Switzerland, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia — charge a time-based motorway vignette, mostly digital and linked to the number plate; buy it before the first motorway past the border, because cameras, not toll booths, do the checking.
  • Central Europe ↗Temporary police checks at internal Schengen borders are common in this region in 2026 (Germany, Austria, Poland, Slovenia among others — check): keep your passport on you on every cross-border train, bus and road even though there is no fixed control post.
  • Germany ↗Germany is in the EU and the Schengen area: check entry rules, the EU Entry/Exit System and any travel authorisation requirement for your passport on official sources.
  • Germany ↗Nazi symbols and gestures are criminal offences, including as jokes or souvenirs.
  • Germany ↗Many city centres are low-emission zones: a car needs the right sticker (Umweltplakette) to enter.

Getting around

Everything in the old town is walkable, but the surface is cobblestone: wear flat shoes. The station is an 8-minute walk from the centre. A footbridge beside the railway bridge crosses the Neckar to Edingen-Neckarhausen, and a small ferry also runs across. Regional trains link Mannheim and Heidelberg; the A5 motorway exit is signed for Ladenburg.

Castle ruin, old bridge and university quarter; the obvious pairing with Ladenburg.

Baroque grid city, art museum and the Luisenpark; good for a wet afternoon.

Another small old town with a hilltop ruin; combine with Ladenburg only if you have a car.

Train via Mannheim or Heidelberg, then a short walk

Palace and formal gardens; a half day on its own.

Sinsheim

Door to door: About 1–1.5 h

Train via Heidelberg or Meckesheim, then bus

Only worth it for the Technik Museum; check connections, they are not frequent.

Door to door: About 1.5 h

Train via Mannheim or Heidelberg

A full day; do it from Heidelberg or Mannheim rather than from Ladenburg.

Heilbronn

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Old town (Altstadt)

Small hotels and guesthouses within a few minutes of the sights; few rooms, so book ahead for weekends.

Near the station / Benzstraße

Chain hotel and easier parking; 8–10 min walk to the old town.

Heidelberg or Mannheim

Better value and more choice; 10–20 min by train if you only want a day visit.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe for a town of its size; the real issues are uneven cobblestones, dark riverside paths at night and the usual caution around strangers who approach you to sell something.
  • Cobblestones are uneven and slippery when wet; the old town is not step-free everywhere.
  • Some sights and restaurants close on Mondays and at midday; check hours before you travel.
  • The water tower and Sebastianskapelle have been under renovation at times: check before making a special trip.
  • Small-town evening options are limited; the last regional trains to Heidelberg and Mannheim run before midnight.
