Ladenburg
Go for half a day from Heidelberg or Mannheim, not as a base: the old town is 20 minutes end to end, so 3–4 hours covers it.
Ladenburg is a small Neckar town of about 8,300 people, 8 minutes on foot from its station to a cobbled old town that fits in a few streets. It claims the oldest city status on the right bank of the Rhine, granted in 98 AD, and it is where Carl Benz lived and worked. Two car museums, a Roman-era museum and a riverside meadow fill a half day; the evening belongs to Heidelberg or Mannheim.

Get around
Everything in the old town is walkable, but the surface is cobblestone: wear flat shoes. The station is an 8-minute walk from the centre. A footbridge beside the railway bridge crosses the Neckar to Edingen-Neckarhausen, and a small ferry also runs across. Regional trains link Mannheim and Heidelberg; the A5 motorway exit is signed for Ladenburg.
