San BrunoSan Bruno, California

Sleep here for an early SFO flight, not to sightsee: 1 night, BART or Caltrain to the city, walk the Avenue for dinner.

San Bruno is a small Peninsula city wedged between South San Francisco and Millbrae, minutes from San Francisco International Airport and on both BART and Caltrain. It is a practical base for a flight morning or a cheap bed near the airport, with a compact downtown strip, a mall at Tanforan and ridge hiking at Sweeney Ridge. Sightseeing is thin: most travellers use it as a bed, not a destination.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

BART (San Bruno station) and Caltrain (San Bruno station) both run to San Francisco and south to Millbrae and San Jose; SamTrans buses cover the county. Downtown is walkable; the airport strip is not, so use a hotel shuttle or a short taxi. A car helps only for Sweeney Ridge and Junipero Serra Park.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Door to door: About 45 min

BART from San Bruno to Embarcadero or Montgomery, about 25–30 min

Cheaper and easier than driving; last trains back run around midnight.

Door to door: About 40 min

Drive over Highway 92, about 25 min

Coastside beaches and a harbour; a car is the practical way.

Door to door: About 25 min

Caltrain one stop north, about 5 min, then walk to Burlingame Avenue

Better dinner strip than San Bruno's; pairs with an evening.

Door to door: About 30 min

Caltrain south, about 10 min

Downtown restaurants and a bigger central park.

Menlo Parkcaution

Door to door: About 50 min

Caltrain south, about 30 min

Fine by train, but little reason to go unless you have a specific stop.

Door to door: About 20 min

BART or Caltrain one stop south, about 5 min

BART–Caltrain transfer point and a good dim sum stop.

Door to door: About 20 min

BART or Caltrain north, about 5 min

Mostly biotech offices; skip unless you have business there.

Door to door: About 55 min

Caltrain south, about 35 min

A full half-day at best; downtown is small.

Door to door: About 30 min

Drive or SamTrans via El Camino, about 15 min

Industrial and residential; no reason on a short trip.

Downtown / San Mateo Avenue

Walkable restaurants and bars; Caltrain station at the north end, BART about 15 min uphill.

Bayhill and airport strip

Chain hotels with shuttles along Bayhill Drive and East San Bruno Avenue; quiet at night, nothing to walk to.

El Camino Real

Motels and the Tanforan mall side; SamTrans buses run the corridor all day.

Watch out

Safety

Generally safe and quiet, with the usual US city cautions: keep bags out of sight in a parked car, stay on lit streets downtown after dark, and expect no trouble on the ridge beyond weather and footing.
  • Hotel shuttles run on set schedules: confirm the last pickup before a late arrival.
  • BART stops running around midnight; a taxi from SFO is the fallback.
  • Sweeney Ridge has no water and little shade: carry your own and go early.
  • Fog and wind on the ridge can drop the temperature fast even in summer.

  1. Best months: Apr–Jun, Sep–Oct · avoid Nov–Mar (rain), summer fog on the coast side · month by month →
  2. 1 airport and 3 areas to sleep in

Coming as the guide grows

  1. Airport-to-bed contract for SFO: last BART and Caltrain departures field-checked, taxi and shuttle fallback, overnight rung.
  2. Two walking clusters with rescue anchors: San Mateo Avenue downtown, and the Tanforan and El Camino strip.
  3. Place pages with verified cutoffs (Sweeney Ridge, Junipero Serra Park, Tanforan) and eat pages with last orders.
  4. Hostile arrival fixtures (late flight, fog, no shuttle) so gates A–D can go green.
