Mashiko益子
Go for one night, or a long day trip from Tokyo, if you want to handle pots and buy them: two days only if you book a pottery class.
Mashiko is a rural Tochigi town built on one craft. Kilns have run here since 1853 and the potter Shōji Hamada made the town's wood-ash glazed ware a national reference point; his workshop and home are now a museum. The station, the pottery street and the studios sit about 1.5 km apart, so you walk or rent a bicycle. Most travellers come from Tokyo for the day, but a night lets you reach the outlying kilns and the onsen hotel.

Getting around
The town is walkable but stretched: station to pottery street is about 1.5 km, 20 minutes on foot. Bicycles rent at the station for ¥800 a day or ¥400 for two hours, plus ¥100 an hour after that. Buses run to the Sankokan museum and outlying sights; taxis are few, so book returns. The Mōka Railway links Mashiko, Kitayama and Shimodate.

Safety

- Ceramics are heavy and fragile: ask the shop to pack for a flight, and check your airline's cabin allowance.
- Rural buses and the Mōka Railway thin out in the evening; check the last departure before you go out.
