Sault Sainte Marie is Michigan's oldest city and the northern end of I-75, sitting on the St. Mary's River across from its Canadian twin. The reason to come is the Soo Locks, where Great Lakes freighters drop between Lake Superior and the lower lakes. Everything worth seeing sits within a 2 km waterfront strip, so a single night covers it; the rest of the Upper Peninsula is the trip.

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: I-75 Business Spur (3 Mile Road exit) runs through town as Ashmun Street to Portage Avenue and the locks. Dial-A-Ride runs scheduled weekday buses on two routes, roughly until 16:00, about $4. Downtown, the locks, the Valley Camp and the Tower of History are all walkable from each other.

Watch out

Safety

A small, low-crime town; the real risks are winter driving, ice on the waterfront, and the International Bridge if you carry no passport. Downtown is quiet after dark.
  • I-75 ends at the International Bridge toll plaza: without a passport, passport card or Enhanced ID you will be turned around, and the queue backs up.
  • Clyde's and West Pier drive-ins are seasonal; several riverfront sights cut hours outside summer.
  • Winter brings lake-effect snow and ice; the I-500 snowmobile race closes roads around the track.
  • Cell coverage is fine in town but thin once you head into the Hiawatha forest.
