Tocumwal

Give Tocumwal one night, two if you fish or camp: river beach, Big Cod photo, historic aerodrome, then move on. A half-day stop is enough otherwise.

Tocumwal sits on the Murray River in the NSW Riverina, on the Newell Highway between Melbourne and Brisbane and about 3 h from Melbourne. It is a river-and-camping town: a big sandy beach, free informal camping in the red gum forest, a WWII aerodrome, four pubs and a golf course. Most travellers use it as one night on a drive, or a weekend of fishing and swimming.

  • Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
  • Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
  • Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
  • Australia ↗Almost every visitor needs a visa or an electronic authorisation (ETA or eVisitor, depending on passport) before boarding: apply only through the official Department of Home Affairs site or the official AustralianETA app, and check the rules for your passport.
  • Australia ↗Declare all food, plant material, seeds, wood and animal products on your arrival declaration; undeclared items can bring on-the-spot fines or visa cancellation. When unsure, declare it.
  • Australia ↗Drive on the left. An overseas licence in English (or with an official translation or International Driving Permit) is accepted for visitors; check the state rules and your rental contract.
  • Australia ↗Swim between the red and yellow flags on patrolled beaches; rip currents cause most beach drownings.

Getting around

Tocumwal is small and flat: the main street, foreshore and most motels are within a 15-min walk. A car is needed for the aerodrome, the Blowhole and the golf club. There is no passenger train service; the railway station is freight only. Regional coaches on the Newell Highway stop in town — check timetables before relying on them.

Watch out

Safety

Tocumwal is a quiet, low-crime country town; the real risks are the unpatrolled Murray current, summer heat and unsealed roads after rain. Lock the car and keep valuables out of sight at the river.
  • The Murray current is strong and Town Beach is unpatrolled: no lifeguards, and the river bed drops away.
  • Informal riverside camping is free but has no toilets or bins: bring your own and take all waste out.
  • Campsites are at a premium over Christmas–New Year, Australia Day, Victorian Labour Day and Easter — arrive early.
  • Summer heat: plan walks and river time for early morning or late afternoon.
  • Rural pubs and the golf club have dress rules; check before you go in.
