Brattleboro is a Connecticut River town of about 12,000 people in southern Vermont, and for most travellers arriving from the south it is the first stop in the state. The draw is the compact 19th-century downtown on Main and Elliot Streets, a small museum, a farmers' market and the Amtrak Vermonter, which puts the town on a direct line from New York and Washington. It is a walking town, not a sightseeing checklist.

Walk the centre: Main and Elliot Streets and the museum are all within about 15 minutes on foot. For anything outside town you need a car, and downtown traffic backs up on Main Street, so park once and leave the car. Parking all day is cheap (under $10). The Brattleboro Amtrak station is a short walk south of downtown.
