Skip as a base unless you have family or valley-walking plans: one afternoon covers the town, and Bridgend or Cardiff is a better bed.
Maesteg is a former iron and coal town at the head of the Llynfi Valley in Bridgend County Borough, about 20,600 people, and the English meaning of the name is 'fair field'. It is a working valley town, not a sightseeing town: the reason to come is the valley itself, the Llynfi and the hills above it, plus a cheap bed if you are visiting family or walking. Trains run hourly to Bridgend and Cardiff, so it works as a half-day or a one-night stop, not a trip on its own.

Getting around
The town centre is walkable in 15 minutes end to end. Maesteg station is a 2-minute walk from the centre and unstaffed; Ewenny Road and Garth stations also serve the town and are unstaffed. Buses leave from the bus station behind the town hall, mostly First Cymru, to Bridgend, Swansea via Port Talbot, Caerau Park, Llangynwyd and Cymmer. Taxis are the practical option for Llangynwyd and the valley villages.

Safety
- Trains are hourly and the station is unstaffed: buy before you board or use contactless where available.
- Valley roads are narrow and steep; winter ice and fog are real hazards on the A4063 and the mountain roads.
- Mobile signal is patchy in the upper valley and on the hills.
- Some pubs are cash-friendly but not all take card at the bar: carry a little cash.
