KatyKaty, Texas

Base in Katy only if you have a car and a reason (Katy Mills, Typhoon Texas, a Houston suburb stay): 1 night, 2 max. Without a car, skip it.

Katy is a suburban town on I-10 about 30–45 minutes west of downtown Houston, grown from a Missouri–Kansas–Texas railroad stop into a shopping-and-subdivision belt. Sights are spread along freeways and frontage roads, so a car decides whether the town works for you. Most visitors pass through for Katy Mills, a waterpark day or a cheaper bed near Houston.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

A car is effectively required: hotels, malls and parks sit along I-10, Grand Parkway (TX 99) and SH 6 with long gaps between them. Metro buses (39 Katy Freeway) and weekday-only park-and-ride routes (221, 222, 228, 229, 298) link parts of Katy with downtown Houston, but nothing runs on weekends and stops are far apart. Biking works only for short hops inside a subdivision.

Watch out

Safety

Katy is a low-crime suburban town; the real risks are driving (I-10 traffic, frontage-road merges), summer heat, and flash flooding that closes parks and low roads after storms.
  • Distances are deceptive: a 'nearby' store can be a 10-minute drive on the frontage road.
  • Summer heat and humidity are severe; plan indoor or water-based afternoons in Jul–Aug.
  • George Bush Park and Barker Reservoir close after heavy rain or hurricanes — check before driving out.
  • Weekday-only park-and-ride buses: no service on weekends.
  • Prices in shops and restaurants are shown before Texas sales tax.
