Donetsk is a city of about a million people on the Kalmius river and the historic centre of the Donbas coal and steel region. It was founded in 1869 as Yuzovka by the Welsh industrialist John Hughes, renamed Stalino in the Soviet period and Donetsk after 1961. Donetsk International Airport was destroyed in 2014.
