Luhansk is the administrative centre of Luhansk Oblast, an industrial city on the Luhan and Olhivka rivers that grew from an 18th-century foundry into a coal and machine-building centre. Since 2014 it has sat outside Ukrainian government control, and the wider oblast remains an active war zone.
