Ottawa is a small Illinois River town of about 19,000 people, 90 minutes southwest of Chicago on I-80. It matters for three things: the first Lincoln-Douglas debate in 1858, an Underground Railroad stop, and its position as the gateway to Starved Rock and Buffalo Rock state parks. The historic core is walkable in an afternoon; the parks need a car and a full day.

Getting around
You need a car. Ottawa has no useful local bus for visitors; North Central Area Transit (ridencat.com) runs limited service to LaSalle and other LaSalle County towns. Downtown is flat and walkable in 15 minutes end to end. Starved Rock and Buffalo Rock are 15–25 min east by car; there is no shuttle from town.

- Summer weekends fill the park lots by mid-morning; arrive before 9am or park at the visitor centre and walk.
