Ottawa, Illinois
Ottawa
One night, or a half-day stop off I-80: the Lincoln-Douglas square, Reddick Mansion and the canal trail. Two nights only if you add Starved Rock.
Ottawa is a small Illinois River town of about 19,000 people, 90 minutes southwest of Chicago on I-80. It matters for three things: the first Lincoln-Douglas debate in 1858, an Underground Railroad stop, and its position as the gateway to Starved Rock and Buffalo Rock state parks. The historic core is walkable in an afternoon; the parks need a car and a full day.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Starved Rock and Buffalo Rock trails close after ice and heavy rain: check the Illinois DNR site before driving out.
- Summer weekends fill the park lots by mid-morning; arrive before 9am or park at the visitor centre and walk.
- The John Hossack House is a private home: view it from the street only.
- Ticks and poison ivy on the bluff trails; long trousers and repellent in summer.
- Winter driving on I-80 can be icy with lake-effect snow squalls east of Ottawa.
A quiet small town; the real risks are the drive (I-80 winter ice, deer at dusk) and bluff trails that close after rain. Downtown is fine on foot after dark.
