Oakland is a port city of about 440,000 on the east side of San Francisco Bay, 12–20 min from San Francisco by BART. It is the Bay Area's most diverse city, with a strong food and arts scene, a walkable downtown core and a lake in the middle of town. Two nights covers the centre and the waterfront; add a third for the hills and a day trip.

Getting around
BART is the backbone: 12th St, 19th St and MacArthur stations cover downtown, and the Orange Line runs to Richmond and Berryessa. AC Transit buses fill the gaps ($2.50 cash, $2.25 with Clipper; local day pass $5 — check). Use Clipper or contactless on your phone for all Bay Area agencies. A car helps for the hills and day trips but parking is metered and residential zones are permit-only.
